The Benefits of Functional Foods

Do you know about functional foods? These are foods with components recognized for their extra benefits to human health. They do more than just meet our basic nutritional needs. In some cases, they may lower the risk of chronic illnesses.

Functional foods are different from nutraceuticals, which are manufactured from vegetable or animal substances and offered in medicinal form, such as powders or pills.

Enriched foods or pills?

Health professionals have recognized the benefits of functional foods rich in essential nutrients and active ingredients. Nutrients are absorbed more effectively when consumed in their natural form rather than from a pill or capsule. When it comes to our eating habits, it's also much more logical, practical and enjoyable to consume nutrient-rich foods than supplements in pill form.

  • Omega-3 comes from a marine source or cold-pressed linseed oil.
  • Calcium in our juice and milk blend comes from natural sources - dairy ingredients and skimmed milk - which are soluble and easily absorbed by the body. The calcium supplement in our apple juices comes from a mineral source, calcium lactate.
  • Vitamin C comes from fruit juices (such as orange, lemon and passion fruit), vegetables (such as tomatoes, peppers, parsley, watercress and spinach) and puréed fruits, or is added to increase the recommended daily allowance.
  • Folic acid is most commonly found in orange juice.
  • Probiotics come from a selection of two healthy probiotic bacterial cultures: Bifidobacterium lactis and Lactobacillus acidophilus.
  • Fibre comes from a natural source (chicory root) and the fibres naturally present in juices, concentrates and purées.
  • Polyphenols occur naturally in a great many fruits that are rich in dark pigment.
